In the Samurai-era, there existed a habit of offering rice cake on a container called "gusoku" (men), and on a dresser (women) during new year days and to cut and eat them on the 20th day. This is what is called Kagami-biraki, and Kodokan started the ceremony around 1884. It is placed on the second Sunday of January nowadays at Kodokan. The ceremony begins with New Year greeting message, followed by speech of president of Kodokan, Kata performance, Randori and ends with "Shiruko-kai" (all participants eat sweet red-bean soup with rise cake.). | |
